Neman Family Tree

The Macomber Family – Of Such As These

Some time in the early to mid-1970s, Minnie Alice (Macomber) Rhoads wrote Of Such As These, a genealogical book about her family line. Minnie Rhoads was Miles Macomber's younger sister.

The parents of Miles and Minnie were John Wesley Macomber and Nellie Ermina (Duryea) Macomber. Mrs. Rhoads's book contains many anecdotes and much information about both of her parents' families, going back several centuries.

I never met Mrs. Rhoads, nor do I know how accurate any of her information is, although she does cite references. The book is self-published, and was obviously constructed with great care and pride. The pages were written on a typewriter, and despite Mrs. Rhoads's care, the text contains numerous spelling and grammatical errors. The copy belonging to my grandfather contains an autograph on the title page which reads, "Wishes for a good life – Minnie Alice Rhoads."

I have done my best to transfer this book to an Adobe document, but I do not have the time to do it properly.

I tried using OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software, which converts text characters from a piece of paper into text which is editable on a computer. However, the old typewritten characters proved too difficult for the software to interpret. Perhaps very advanced OCR software would do a better job, but such software is expensive.

Next, I tried retyping the document entirely, but this quickly proved fruitless. Not only would it take far more time than I could afford, but I was faced with the constant temptation to correct Mrs. Rhoads's spelling and grammatical errors, even though I wasn't interested in changing the document, simply reporting it. Additionally, while some errors were obvious, it was not always obvious what the correction ought to be.

In the end, I abandoned any idea of converting this book to a true digital document. Instead, I have scanned each page into the computer as a photograph. This is extremely important to understand if you wish to work with this document. A person can read the text easily, but it is still nothing more than a photographic image. The computer does not know that it is text; you cannot highlight any of this text in order to copy and paste it elsewhere; and no search engine will identify the text as words.

When scanning the pages, I used a black backing board, but many times, the text on the reverse side of the paper still bled through. I have attempted to correct this as best as I reasonably could, especially in the pages depicting family trees.

I offer the book here in two different ways: as a complete book; and broken into three parts, for people who might have trouble downloading large files.

Since I don't have time to retype this book, I don't have time to index it, either. In order for search engines to find this document, and to help people find specific information, I have typed many key words below, along with the general pages on which the relevant information first appears. It is not a true index, so please do not treat it as such.

An important point about page numbers: Because I scanned the book's cover, title page, and opening poem, the page numbers of the large Adobe document are not the same page numbers as the original book. Also, the Adobe files which contain only parts of the book are certainly not going to match the page numbers of the original book, and I don't want to refer to two different sets of page numbers (one set for the large file, one set for the files split into parts). Therefore, when I refer to page numbers, I refer to the page numbers of the original book, not to the page numbers of any Adobe file. The page numbers of the original book are easily visible on each page.

The book contains several pages of photos. These pages were originally created by placing photos face down on a copying machine, so their quality is not great. I have scanned these pages and left them as they are in the book, but I have also created a separate page containing only the photos, along with my own captions. I did this so image search engines could find the photos, and also to allow people to download the photos separately, outside of the Adobe files. The photos were sometimes cropped in odd ways and were often crooked, and I have made no attempt to correct this.

I have also scanned an old newspaper article about Mrs. Rhoads and her book.
